nine year old set to graduate university

When 9-year-old Laurent Simmons from Belgium was a little kid, his grandparents suspected he had an extraordinary gift and a highly enabled memory. His parents didn’t take it seriously until his teachers did. The staff at school went on to give him extra tests and more work than the other children, trying to assess the extent of his capability. Soon enough, they found out it was beyond the scope of middle school and high school.

They noticed something very special about Laurent,” said his mother, Lydia to CNN [1]

The boy later went on to begin his study in electrical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) in The Netherlands. Laurent will be graduating with his first bachelor’s degree in December, his father Alexander told CNN.

“He went to school and the teachers said that he’s really bright, really very clever. They gave him extra tasks, extra tests, and the ball started to roll from then on. And before you know it, he graduates primary school, and then high school, and now almost university,” Alexander said.

Laurent – who comes from a family of doctors – is gearing up to enroll in a Ph.D. program while also studying for a degree in Medicine. He told CNN that his favorite subject is electrical engineering, and now, he’s going to be a proud bachelor in the field.

The university staff were amazed at his abilities

Laurent was allowed to work through his course faster than the other students, completing the entire course work in a shorter period.

“That is not unusual,” said Sjoerd Hulshof, education director of the electrical engineering Bachelor’s program at TUE. “Special students that have good reasons for doing so can arrange an adjusted schedule. In much the same way we help students who participate in top sport. Laurent is the fastest student we have ever had here. Not only is he hyper-intelligent but also a very sympathetic boy.”

While most people in Laurent’s family are naturally intelligent, he is far beyond their scope of enablement.

“So he goes fast and we don’t have an explanation for that. We don’t know what happened,” Alexander said.

Lydia jokingly claims her son is able to learn so quickly because she ate a lot of fish while she was pregnant with him.

The boy is already being scouted by dozens of prestigious universities from all around the world. His parents withheld information on his choice for his Ph.D. and medical programs.

The absorption of information is no problem for Laurent,” Alexander explained. “I think the focus will be on research and applying the knowledge to discover new things.”

A kid at heart

Laurent has already decided the ambition after his heart. He plans to develop artificial organs to help patients who need them to return to their normal lives.

Laurent’s parents are careful not to let him get carried away in the world of grown-ups. They make sure to let him still be a 9-year-old while going on to do great things in the world.

“We don’t want him to get too serious. He does whatever he likes,” said Alexander. “We need to find a balance between being a child and his talents.”

The young Einstein loves traveling, playing games on his phone, and playing with his dog Sammy. The young chap is excited about his vacation to Japan before he settles into the next phase of his academic career.

According to his father, “He’s just enjoying life.”

Just as he should be.
