woman who texted her dead fathers phone for four years finally gets a reply

23-year-old Chastity Patterson from Arkansas was heartbroken when she lost her father in 2015 [1]. She missed him so terribly that she continued updating him about her life, sending text messages to his phone number and pouring out her heart whenever she needed someone to talk to.

This went on for four years and Chastity believed that wherever he was, her father could read her messages and follow up on her life. On the eve of the fourth anniversary of his death, she sent him a lengthy, emotional message and was shocked when she received a reply.

Chastity took to her Facebook page to share screenshots of the message she sent her father that day – and the reply she received from a stranger who had been reading all the others for four years. He lost his daughter in a car crash and found solace in Chastity’s messages.

She wrote on Facebook: “I text my dad every day to let him know how my day goes, for the past four years! Today was my sign that everything is okay and I can let him rest!”

They helped each other deal with painful grief

On that day, she texted him a series of updates about her life, telling him about how she beat cancer and graduated college with honors, falling in love and getting her heart broken, losing all her friends and finding a true one, and being afraid of marriage because her father wouldn’t be there to hold her hand through it all.

I don’t have any children yet. You would be so happy, but I’m ready. Still drive Momma crazy every day, but I’m keeping her on her toes. I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me the most, but one day we will get our chance to watch that game. I’m doing great. You would be so proud of the woman I have become,” her message partly read.

She concluded: “I just wanted to say I love you and I really do miss you!”

Chastity wasn’t expecting what happened next. She received a reply from a man named Brad whose daughter died in a car accident 2014, just a year before Chastity’s dad. He wrote that her messages kept him alive and have helped him deal with the painful loss.

I’m sorry you lost someone so close to you but I have listened to you over the years and I have watched you grow and go through more than anyone,” Brad wrote. “I have wanted to text you back for years but I didn’t want to break your heart. You are an extraordinary woman and I wish my daughter would have become the woman you are.”

According to Brad, the messages reinforced his belief in that there God who is not to be blamed for his daughter’s death.

He gave me you, my little angel and I knew this day was coming. Everything will be okay. You have to push yourself every day and shine the light God gave you. I’m sorry you have to go through this, but if it makes it any better, I’m very proud of you.”

Her father had been the center of her world

Chastity’s post has so far garnered 178K reactions, 23K comments and a stunning 309K shares on Facebook. YouTube videos have been made about her story and it’s been published by several newspapers around the world. Hundreds of thousands of people have drawn strength from her touching story, and she wants everyone to know that there is nothing wrong with grieving. It’s part of the circle of life.

“After reading a few comments and some amazing stories in my inbox I see that my post has touched SO many lives. I’m sorry if people cried and I’m so sorry for everyone that has lost someone close to them,” she wrote in a follow-up Facebook post.

According to her post, Jason is not her biological father, but being bound by blood wouldn’t have made any difference.

“He never missed a school dance, prom, my games and YES he would give me long talks about my mouth and attitude. I had to introduce my boyfriends to him (If I was allowed to date) and he would act like a normal dad and give us the long talk. I’ve cried with him, told him everything and even became very independent because he took the time to love me and show me what happiness looks like. SO YES Jason was my father but he was a role model for many kids in our town.”
